cutting metal
It's official: the new name for the refurbished Engineering Library will be EPS
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Library.

Construction is progressing steadily as we continue into the new year - if you've wandered near Engineering Library recently you'll probably have heard the melodious noises of machinery cutting through wood, metal, and concrete.

A lot's going on at the moment but some highlights are:
  • toilet blocks on levels 1 and 2 are looking great;
  • electronic parts for mobile shelving (for journals) are being ordered/shipped from the United States;
  • furniture is being sourced locally and will be delivered early February;
  • carpet tiles are being laid.
As with any big project some delays have come up in different areas of the work but we're working around these / creating contingency plans as the need arises.

For photos of progress as it continues, see our Flickr account or our photo album on Facebook.

From time to time I look at our statistics logs to see how people are getting to the blog and what they're looking for. A couple of recent searches wanted to know about:

  • what books to get - someone starting to wonder what books to buy for their courses this year. For this one, start at the UC Courses page. Do a course code search (eg ENGR 101 and look for the list of Required Texts. Note: It's still early days so not all lists are finalised yet, and the University Bookshop hasn't yet received all the textbooks it's ordered.
  • emailing a lecturer - Most lecturers have email addresses in the form firstname.lastname@canterbury.ac.nz If you want to check, you can search University Contacts. If you're not certain who the lecturer is for your course, do a search on the UC Courses page.

Dave in fluoro safety vest
Scary Dave isn't wearing his red eyes this year but has donned a fluoro vest to wish you happy holidays!

Construction will be continuing while we're on holiday. We'll be back on campus on the 5th January if you have any questions or need any help. In the meantime, enjoy the weather!

Scaffolding among the TK books
We're continuing to retrieve books people request through the library catalogue, but the construction sometimes makes that a bit difficult!

Generally we wait until a pause in the banging and sawing indicates that the construction workers are taking a break, then we head up in the lift (wearing a reflective jacket for safety and carrying a torch because the lift lights are out), pick our way over various obstacles, and clamber through the plastic sheets that have been wrapped around all the shelves.

Some areas are a bit trickier -- here's one where scaffolding blocks access to a large number of books. If you want a book in this area it might take a bit more time to reach you but we'll keep you informed.

Once we have the books, we process them and put them in the hampers to be delivered to the pick-up location the next morning - once it gets there, you'll get an email.

To see more of what's happening, have a look at our 'Merger Construction' photos on Flickr.

If you're wanting books from Engineering Library before Christmas, please request them soon! This weekend or Monday should be okay for most books, but anything requested from Tuesday mightn't reach you until the New Year.

Well Christmas is approaching very fast now...yay!! Just a reminder that even though the library is closed at present you can request books and journals via the library catalogue and nominate a campus library as your pickup location. Items can be returned at any campus library or popped in the Engineering Library dropbox adjacent to the Creyke Road entrance to the mushroom. We are still here,behind closed doors, hard at work, so don't hesitate to contact us if you have any problems.

Wishing everyone a very happy Christmas from the Engineering library team

Old Cave and toilets
We can tell serious construction is getting under way because it's starting to get distinctly noisy in Engineering Library - and also because almost all the carpet upstairs and several walls downstairs are gone!

On the left here is a photo of the space that used to be the Cave computer room and the two (2) toilets that served the entire library.

Framework for new toilets on level 2
We've wanted more toilets for a long time, and knew we couldn't possibly merge two libraries without providing for more, so the renovated building will have toilets on both levels 1 and 2, to a total of 15 toilets (including 2 disabled).

On the right you can see the framework for the new toilets on level 2.

See more photos of the ongoing construction.

carpet torn up
Work is now picking up steam, with hoardings being put up on level 1 (behind which I caught a glimpse of some doors having been pulled down) and here you can see carpet being torn up today from a large section of level 2.

We'll be taking photos regularly, so have a look at the latest pix online.

Engineering new books
Because Engineering Library is closed for construction this summer, we're not putting new books or journals on display. Instead you can request them online as soon as we get them.

To find out what's new in the library, check the new Engineering Library book list of the last 7 days. Then if you see one that looks interesting, click through the title and click "Request" to choose which library you want to pick it up from.
